Born from Service: The Story Behind the First In Foundation

Because heroes never hesitate.

The First In Foundation was created from a simple truth: service doesn’t end when the sirens stop. It’s a calling that carries over into every part of life, rooted in compassion, brotherhood, and the belief that communities are strongest when they stand together.

At the heart of that belief are Jason and Cynthia Tetterton, who together bring 48 years of service to Albemarle County. For decades they have stood on the front lines, answering calls in the middle of the night, mentoring new firefighters, organizing community outreach, and supporting families through unimaginable loss. Their commitment to helping others has always extended beyond the firehouse doors.

Joining them is Hunter Thomasson, whose 10 years of dedicated service add another chapter to this story of selflessness and resilience. Hunter represents the next generation of leadership, the bridge between tradition and progress, and shares the same deep sense of duty to both first responders and the people they protect.

Together, this team saw a need: a way to help first responders, their families, and the communities they serve when life turns upside down. That vision became the First In Foundation.

Our Mission

To stand with first responders, their families, and our community by providing support in times of crisis, funding lifesaving equipment, and recognizing the people who never hesitate to serve.

Whether it’s helping a family rebuild after tragedy, mentoring the next generation, or ensuring departments have the tools they need to keep our communities safe, the Foundation exists to carry forward the same spirit that drives every emergency call: be ready, be steady, and be first in.

Looking Ahead

The Foundation’s roots may be new, but the values that built it are not. They were forged over nearly six decades of combined service, strengthened by friendships made in the fire service, and fueled by a shared commitment to do more for those who always do the most.

This is just the beginning. Together, we are ensuring that the people who put others first never stand alone.
